A council in County Antrim has reversed a decision to cancel a play that some councillors had said was blasphemous.

Newtownabbey Borough Council’s artistic board last week cancelled the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged).

The comic play was due to run at the council’s Theatre at the Mill from Wednesday, 29 January, for two nights.

But on Monday the artistic board decided to put the play back on and the full council ratified that decision.

The play will now go ahead as scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday.

A comedy show about the Bible, which producers say has been endorsed by hundreds of [APOSTATE] clergy, has been axed from the Theatre at the Mill in Newtownabbey amid claims it was “anti-Christian”

The Reduced Shakespeare Company was due to kick off its latest UK tour by presenting The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged) at the council-run venue on 29 and 30 January.

But earlier this month, calls for the show to be cancelled were made by DUP councillors.

The party’s Robert Hill told UTV on Thursday that members of the public had approached representatives asking them to “get it stopped” on the grounds that it was offensive.

He said the council was “willing to take a moral stand” and hit back at those who have criticised the decision by claiming it amounts to censorship of the arts.

“Every film in the theatre is censored – that’s why there are age limits on what can be seen and what can’t. And where do you stop? There has to be a limit somewhere,” Mr Hill said.

Loyalist protestors at Twaddell Civil Rights camp tucked into their turkey and ham dinners on Christmas Day on site – on day 167 of their ongoing sit-out.

Determined loyalists who refused to take even Christmas Day off were “treated to full Christmas dinners” in their caravan at the north Belfast flashpoint.

Gerald Solinas, a member of the camp committee, said: “All shifts were covered on Christmas Day.

“And full Christmas dinners were served up by one of the volunteers to everyone on duty.

“There were people coming along during the day to bring food and other supplies. Other people came along to show their support.

“It was Christmas and they had a bit of a laugh.

“I think at one stage everybody had about five Christmas puddings sitting because so much food had been sent up.

“A lot of people were dropping in biscuits for us and other supplies to lend their support.

“There was a good mix of people there. I was not there all day.”

Mr Solinas, from the west Belfast UPRG, said the Camp Twaddell is “still going strong”.

“At the parade on Christmas night we had around 120 people which was a surprise given the weather and Christmas festivities and all that.

“That is twice as big a crowd as a normal parade attracts.

“The support and the will is still there for the brethren and bandsmen to complete their 12th of July parade.”

Mr Solinas added that he did not believe “a lot will come out of the Haass talks”.

He added: “I think the critical error Mr Haass made was that be barely engaged with the people on the ground.”

Loyalist campaigners set up the protest camp at Twaddell after the Parades Commission’s decision to stop the parade from completing its traditional Twelfth route earlier this year.

The site is manned on a 24-hour basis.

The vice chair of the Haass talks, Professor Meghan O’Sullivan, visited the Civil Rights Camp at Twaddell Avenue yesterday and later met with Orange Order representatives from Drumcree.

She was greeted by members of the Twaddell camp committee in Belfast, who outlined the issues in relation to the refusal by the Parades Commission to allow the Ligoniel lodges and bands to complete their Twelfth parade home.

A camp representative said: “We sought to show Dr O’Sullivan not only the ludicrous nature of denying the lodges home, but also the unity of the unionist family in support of our cause – residents, bands, Loyal Orders, community groups and political parties standing together.” PUP spokesman Winston Irvine said it had been a very positive meeting.

“We told her the Crumlin Road had been shared for over 140 years and that resolution of this issue will set a positive context for the outcome of the wider talks,” he said.

She asked the protestors what they saw as the solution to the impasse, he said. The PUP spokesman said they wanted to see a replacement for the Parades Commission.

Meanwhile, representatives of Portadown District who met Prof O’Sullivan last night in Portadown included District Master Darryl Hewitt, County Armagh Grand Master Denis Watson and the Deputy Grand Master the Rev Alistair Smyth.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Hewitt described the conversations with Ms O’Sullivan as “amicable but forthright”.

He said: “Drumcree was the first parade to be restricted by that unelected and unaccountable quango, the Parades Commission, and we therefore feel that it is significant that Ms O’Sullivan met us at this place.”

He added: “We have been at Drumcree since July 1998 and we still attempt to complete our parade each and every Sunday.

“We still find it incredible that some seven years after offering talks with the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition, without preconditions, it is the very people who called for talks in the first place who have so far not ‘stepped up to the mark’ by entering dialogue with us.”

Prof O’Sullivan was the brains behind the decisive US ‘surge’ strategy in Iraq, where she also drafted the country’s constitution.

She is a Professor of International Affairs at Harvard and was an adviser to the Bush administration on Afghanistan and Iraq.

Robert Blackwill, her predecessor as George W Bush’s chief Iraq adviser on the National Security Council, said: “She knows more about Iraq and its political personalities than anyone in the administration, which is probably saying anyone in the West.”

UNITED Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) Down District representative Alan Lewis has written to the Equality Commission asking them to review the bilingual policy of Down District Council saying all decisions should be deferred and brought before the new elected council in 2014 following the merger with Newry and Mourne Council and a full financial appraisal being conducted then.

He said: “Firstly this isn’t a bilingual policy… this is [A LEPRECHAUN] language policy. I question why the [LEPRECHAUN] language has been given equal status with English when according to the 2011 census results 89% of people in this district have no understanding of the [LEPRECHAUN] language.

“Unionists in Down Newry and Mourne area are now beginning to see how an amalgamated council will play out the evidence points towards a cold house for unionism. A document has been passing its way through Down District Council relating to a framework for a [TERROR]ist-dominated council.”

Mr Lewis added: “I believe this policy actively discriminates against unionism, The bilingual policy states ‘Staff who speak Irish will be encouraged to use the language at point of contact‘. So, will a situation arise where Down ratepayers are welcomed to their civic building in a language 89% have no understanding of?

“The policy also states Council will support [LEPRECHAUN] language and cultural activities by facilitating events within the council buildings and venues”. Will unionist events be looked upon with such favour? Will equal facilitation be made available to Ulster Scots groups? Will funding be made available to unionist groups on equal bases?
